Resistant Materials | Home

The Resistant Materials GCSE is concerned with the design and manufacture of a product, this is coursework and accounts for 60% of the total marks.  The design folder must include relevant research and drawings leading to the successful design of an artifact suitable for the student to make.  The examination is also based around designing and making of everyday articles and also requires knowledge of materials and processes used in various areas of manufacturing, along with such things as safety and environmental issues.  The examination accounts for 40% of the total marks.

The breakdown of marks is:    60% for the design folder and the practical  - 40% for the examination.

There is a cross over between the design folder and the practical work,  because the folder must carry evidence of such issues as quality control, quality assurance and a diary of making.

Greenshaw High School has chosen a Resistant Material Course which is predominantly timber orientated, but there is some scope for the inclusion of a small amount of metal or plastic.  The examining board is AQA and the students are entered either at higher or foundation level.  Any special materials or finishes must be supplied by the student.
